Oregon Society of Clinical Hypnosis
A Component Section of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis
What is OSCH?
In 1953, John G. Watkins, Ph.D., Chief Psychologist for the Veterans Hospital in Portland, with a part-time private practice in Tigard, started giving weekly courses in hypnotherapy. Seven to ten participants regularly attended these courses over the next several years.
From these participants emerged a small, dedicated, core of individuals which included Walter R. Lindsey, D.D.S., H. Clagett (Larry) Harding, M..D., and surgeon Dan N. Steffanoff, M.D., who together in 1956 established the Portland Academy of Hypnosis. Walter Lindsey was the first president.

Their strong desire was to promote ethical use of clinical hypnosis and education in medical uses of hypnosis.
In Februrary, 1997, a Code of Ethics was approved by the Portland Academy of Hypnosis. In 2002, the name of the organization was changed to Oregon Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
Today, OSCH offers education and support to health care providers in the safe, effective, and ethical use of clinical hypnosis.
The Society offers an annual basic workshop for colleagues beginning their education and training in the area as well as more advanced workshops focused on specific clinical issues. Our 44th Annual Basic Workshop will be offered in 2007. As a 20-hour course, it qualifies one for membership in the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis as well as the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.
