The relationship between trance and dissociation is well-established (Bliss, 1983) in the literature. It is no surprise, then, that several important thinkers have cross-pollinated between the dissociative disorders and hypnosis fields. Much of the literature and workshops discuss treatment of persons with dissociative disorders based on established approaches without exploring their inner workings. What, though, of the spark of creativity that contributes to the development of these interventions? How do the hastily combined elements used to bail a clinician out of a treatment bind later reveal themselves to be the building blocks for an effective framework or protocol?

In this workshop, we will first discuss basic considerations for treating persons with dissociative disorders, dissociation and trance, and elements of one integrative approach to working with dissociative clients. We will then explore four novel uses of hypnotic interventions and trance within an integrative treatment frame, beginning with the comparatively simple and concluding with a much more complex integration of approaches. We will discuss not only the interventions themselves but also the context for their initial development. Although a familiarity and experience with psychodynamic psychotherapy, Ego State Therapy (Watkins & Watkins, 1997), and EMDR therapy (Shapiro, 2018) are not required to attend, they will be variously necessary to implement the interventions discussed.

All live stream attendees will be able to access the footage of the training for 30 days following the date of the event.

Schedule:
The training runs from 9am to 5pm Pacific Time. Lunch is on your own from 12.15-1.15pm Pacific time so please plan accordingly.

About the Presenter: D. Michael Coy LICSW

D. Michael Coy, MA, LICSW, (he/they) is a clinical social worker and maintains a private practice in Bremerton, Washington, USA, where he serves transitional-age youth, adults, and older adults. Psychodynamically grounded, Michael integrates EMDR therapy with additional training in clinical hypnosis, Ego State Therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Deep Brain Reorienting in the treatment of persons struggling with complex trauma histories and dissociative symptoms.

Michael is an EMDR Certified Approved Consultant and Trainer through the EMDR International Association, served on EMDRIA's Standards & Training committee from 2014 to 2017, and currently serves on EMDRIA's Training Council. He completed fundamentals and intermediate trainings in clinical hypnosis in 2014 and 2017, respectively, is a member of both ASCH and SCEH, and is (finally) in the process of obtaining his certification in clinical hypnosis.

Since 2016, Michael has collaborated with colleague Jennifer Madere and Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation developer Paul F. Dell to make the MID more accessible, co-authoring the MID Interpretive Manual and managing the MID Analysis and MID website. Since 2017, Jennifer and Michael have taught hundreds of clinicians how to employ the MID, both in the US and internationally.

Michael has presented and co-presented at a number of ISSTD annual and regional conferences since 2016, and in ISSTD's webinar series, on both the MID and his own, original work; co-presented with Jennifer Madere at EMDRIA's annual conference both in 2017 on the MID and as invited plenary speakers in 2021; and both at the Hypnotic Idea Exchange today and for the Oregon Society of Clinical Hypnosis in late-October 2022.

Michael has served on the ISSTD Board of Directors since 2017 and became Treasurer in 2018, a role in which he continues to serve. From 2017-2020, Michael co-chaired ISSTD's EMDR Therapy Training Task Group, which created ISSTD's EMDR therapy 'basic' training. He now co-chairs ISSTD’s EMDR Therapy Training Committee and co-teaches the training.

Michael has more recently taken a foray into writing, co-authoring both an article and chapter on diagnostic instruments, and will soon begin to procrastinate on writing a chapter on Paul Dell's autohypnotic model of dissociation for an upcoming edited volume.
